UCLA Master of Social Science Program

 

Position Description:

The UCLA Master of Social Science program (MaSS) is seeking to hire a lecturer for Winter and Spring 2023 to teach SOC SC 430A & B: Community-Based Research. These two courses are required for all students enrolled in the MaSS program. The expected enrollment is approximately 25 students. SOC SC 430A & B are offered as a two-course sequence that guides students through the design and execution of research projects developed in partnership with non-profit organizations in the Los Angeles area. Students work in teams of 3-4 members each. These courses are conducted in a seminar format, meeting once a week. In addition, the instructor meets with each team weekly outside of class.

Primary responsibilities of the instructor include guiding teams through the different stages of the research project including, articulation of research plan, development of research questions, literature review, study design and instrument development, data collection and analysis, and write-up process. Teams should receive detailed written comments from the instructor on a number of drafts of the project submitted throughout the two quarters.

Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a PhD in a social science or related discipline. Prior teaching experience required, preferably with experience teaching at the graduate level. The ideal candidate for this position will have significant experience in designing and conducting research. Further, ideally candidates should have experience mentoring students undertaking mixed-methods research, using a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Experience working with non-profit organizations is preferred.
